Understanding Sciatica: Causes and Treatments
Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. It is a symptom of an underlying condition, not a diagnosis in itself.
What Causes Sciatica?
The most common cause is a herniated disc in the lumbar spine that compresses the sciatic nerve. Other causes include spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, and spondylolisthesis.
Symptoms to Watch For
Symptoms include sharp or burning pain in the lower back, buttock, and leg; numbness or tingling; and muscle weakness in the affected leg.
How Physiotherapy Helps
A physiotherapist will assess your posture, strength, and flexibility to identify the root cause. Treatment may include manual therapy, specific exercises to relieve nerve compression, and postural education.
When to Seek Urgent Care
If you experience sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area, seek immediate medical attention as these may indicate cauda equina syndrome.
